Coalition for Community Care Formed to Prevent Massive Mass General Brigham Expansion

Mass General Brigham has filed a $2 billion expansion plan with the Department of Public Health, which includes developing three outpatient clinics that would expand Mass General Brigham’s footprint into the wealthy suburban areas of Westborough, Woburn, and Westwood. The ambulatory services proposed to be offered at each location are already offered by lower-cost, high-quality community providers in these regions.

The Coalition to Protect Community Care is a robust coalition of community members, business leaders, healthcare providers, and concerned citizens opposing Mass General Brigham’s proposed ambulatory care expansion. The coalition believes that an expansion by Mass General Brigham, the state’s most expensive healthcare system, into Westborough, Woburn and Westwood would:

  • Raise Costs | Increase the cost of care in our communities without increasing the quality of care for patients
  • Endanger Local Institutions | Threaten the financial viability of critical community healthcare institutions, resulting in reduced safety net care for our communities’ most vulnerable patients
  • Impair Health Equity | Worsen existing health disparities, and further negatively impact communities hardest hit by COVID-19
  • Replicate Services | Provide a redundant and far more expensive array of services that already exist in our communities today
  • Threaten Jobs | Jeopardize hundreds of essential local jobs

You can learn more about the Coalition here.

The Department of Public Health is currently accepting comment on the project through June 2nd at 5 PM. If you are interested in voicing concern for this proposed project, you can do so by using this platform to submit a pre-written comment or by emailing DPH.DON@MassMail.State.MA.US directly with the subject line: “Testimony: Mass General Brigham Incorporated – Multisite – 21012113-AS”.
